1. Krasnodar Region (www.admkrai.kuban.ru)

General information

Krasnodar region was separated from the Azov-Black sea province September 13, 1937 and is the most southern region of Russia.

The Kuban – is the land of two seas, the Azov and the Black Sea. 740 km of the regional boarder lies along the sea coast, the general boarder extension is 1540 km.

The river Kuban divides the region into two parts: the northern lowland (2/3 of the territory) and the southern highland (1/3/ of the territory).

The general climate is moderate continental, at the Black Sea coast (to the south from town Tuapse) – subtropical. The average lowland January temperatures vary from -3/-5 degrees Celsius, in July: +22/+24 degrees Celsius. The precipitation vary from 400 mm to 600 mm per year in the lowland, and up to 3242 mm per year in the highland.

The region population is over five million people, 53 % of them live in towns, 47 % - in the rural area. The average density of population is 66,6 people per 1 km2.

2. Republic of Kalmykia (www.kalm.ru)

Geographic Outline and Climate

Due to the official territorial administrative division of Russian Federation, the Kalmykia region has an official status of republic with the administrative center in city of Elista. The region is situated in the steppe, semi-desert and desert zones, the territory area is 75,9 thousand km2. the republic is located to the southeast of European part of Russian Federation.
The climate is sharply continental, the summers are hot and very dry, the winters are not snowy, and sometimes frosty. The climate continentality significantly increases from west to east.

Historical Outline

The Kalmyks origin from the Central Asia. Their ancestors were the Yorats, arising from the Chingiz-khan period. Part of the Yorats tribes separated from the other population and moved to the Russian territory. The Kalmyk-khan land was founded in 1609. The main Kalmyk religions are Buddism and Gelukpa. In the Soviet period many of the clerics were repressed and the temples (more than 100) were destroyed. December 28, 1943, the whole region population was deported to the eastern territories of the country and the autonomous republic of Kalmykia was abolished. The deportation continued for 13 years. At the end of 1950th the Kalmyks returned to their homeland.

Leisure and Tourism

Up till present, the republic tourist potential was not developed to the full extent. The Kalmyk people history and culture, nature, ancient traditions, folk arts and crafts contribute to the variety of tourist branches development: the official, cultural, confessional, ecological, equestrian, sport, etc.

The republic is peculiar for unique nature, reserves, rare greenery and birds.
The most significant of the republic natural preserve objects is the biosphere reserve “The Black Lands”, located at the territory of Chernozemelskiy and Yashkulskiy districts.

3. Stavropol Region (www.stavinvest.ru)

General information

The Stavropol region is a vast land in the south of Russia. The region territory is peculiar for endless steppes covered with rare greenery, snowy mountains and beautiful forests.

Geographic Outline

The Stavropol region is situated in the central part of the Caucasus zone at the Northern Caucasus mountainside, between the Black, Azov and Caspian seas basins. The region boarders with nine federal parts of Russia. It is a place of two continents junction, the combination of the European traditions and the Asian coloring.

Historic Outline

The region was established February 13, 1924 as a Southeastern province; October 16, 1924 it was renamed into North Caucasus region; March 17, 1937, it became Ordzhonikidzovskiy region, and finally, since January 12, 1943 and till present moment, the region was established as the Stavropol region. For years, the region has been famous for beautiful resort areas, and its citizens’ hospitality, attracting more and more tourists each year. The region is peculiar for various cultures connection and interrelation, making the Stavropol region tourist experience incredibly colorful and impressing. Here you can enjoy traditional Russian folk songs and the North Caucasus vibrating rhymes, admire the bright palette of the North Caucasus multinational cultures, habits and ways.

The Stavropol region administrative division features 26 districts, 16 towns.
The largest of them are:

Main tourism branches and types

At present, the tourism branches of the Stavropol region are represented by 118 sanatoriums and 5 recreation areas.

There are two of 84 Russian museum preserve areas in the region: one of them is the archeological natural reserve “The Tatar settlement”, located near the city of Stavropol. Its 39 exhibition objects feature: Pogoda waterfalls, The Glass Stream, Travertiny, unique stone structures, caves, bays, clear water springs, ancient tunnel-like forest tracks and flourishing meadows.

The second museum area is the preserve named after M.Y. Lermontov. The museum complex includes Elizavetinskiy Spring, Lermontov Grotto, Crevice, Lermontov’s duel site, Lermontov ground in the Resort Park, Lermontov Cliff, Lermontov Waterfall, etc.

Those who take interest in the history of our planet, can enjoy paleontology places of interests, located in the Stavropol region, such as the Elephantine Epoch fossil remains, the upper Sarmat sea conglomerates, unique geological formations, that give amazing experience looking into the distant past of our planet.

The Stavropol region territory has a great number of tourist routes, varying in complexity: walking, skiing, bicycle, auto and motorcycle, speleological routes.

4. Ukraine (www.ukrtourism.com)

General information

Ukraine is an east European country. It boarders with Byelorussia in the north, with Russian Federation in the north and east, with Poland and Slovakia in the west, with Hungary, Romania and Moldova in the southwest. The southern part of Ukraine is washed by the Black and Azov seas. The territory of Ukraine is 603,7 thousand km2.
The climate in general is moderately continental, only the south of the Crimea has subtropical climate zone. The longest river is the Dnepr, 981 km of the river extension lies on the Ukrainian territory, the general river extension is 2201 km. The largest mountain chain is the Ukrainian Carpathian mountains, with the extension of 270 km, 100-110 km wide. The highest mountain is Goverla (2061 m). Ukraine is the 5th most densely populated country in Europe, the population is 47,5 million people.

Ukraine has a highly developed tourism infrastructure, offering all kinds of tourist attractions, resorts and sights.

5. Volgograd region (www.volganet.ru)

Geographic Outline and Climate

Volgograd region is situated to the southeast of the East-European Plain, between the River Don and the River Volga. The Volga divides the region territory into two parts: the highland right bank (the height up to 358 m) and the lowland left bank (Zavolzhye). The region main rivers are the Don and the Volga. The region territory embodies the Volgograd and the Tsymlyansk reservoirs, salt lakes (Alton and others). The region climate is continental.

Population

The majority of population is Russian. The national minorities are the Ukrainians, the Kazakhs, the Germans and the Tatars. Up to 1942, a part of the Volgograd region belonged to the Volga region German republic. The natality is negative. In recent years, the number of migrants into the Volgograd region relatively decreased, that led to the population number (including the region center) reduction.

6. Voronezh region (www.admin.vrn.ru)

General information

Voronezh region is the largest region of the Central black earth zone. In 1996, the region celebrated its 300 anniversary. The region area is 53,4 thousand km2. The region administrative division includes 32 districts, 15 towns, 22 villages. The region administrative center is the city of Voronezh. The region was established June 13, 1934.

Geographic Outline

Voronezh region is situated in the Central part of the European part of Russia, in the center of the East-European Plain, at the Don river basin. To the west of the region lies the Srednerusskaya highland, to the east – the Oksko-Don plain and the Kalachskya highland.

Climate

The region climate is moderate continental. The winters are moderately mild and snowy. The average January temperatures vary from -8 to -10 degrees Celsius. The winter weather is cloudy, frosty with occasional thaws. The summers are warm. The average July temperatures vary from +19 to +21 degrees Celsius. The weather is hot, clear and windless. The autumns are relatively warm and dry. The precipitation vary from 450 mm to 550 mm per year.

Nature

The region northern part is situated in the forest and steppe area, the southern – in the steppe area. About 10% of the territory is covered by forest. The majority are deciduous forests: oak, ash, maple, linden, left bank send zone has coniferous forests. The Voronezh region’s Usman coniferous forest is one of the last pine kingdom islands by the steppe land boarder. The northern part of the coniferous forest is the Voronezh forest reserve. It was established in the beginning of the 1920th for the river beaver protection and reservation. By that time the number of this animals in the little forest river Usmanka and its confluent Ivnitsa reduced to 50-60 species. The nature and people collaborated helping each other. Nowadays, the number of beaver species living in hundreds of regional rivers goes over several thousands. Nearly half of all the beavers in Russia live in the Voronezh rivers. In last decades, the Voronezh forest reserve also participated in the European deer reservation. The forest reserve is inhabited by fifty five animal species, nearly two hundred bird species, its territory is covered by over one thousand kinds of trees, bushes, grasses, dozens of mushrooms and mosses. For nature and rare species protection and preservation were established the Voronezh (at the Usman coniferous forest territory) and the Khoper (at the Khoper river undercurrent) preserves.
